On Thursday, May 22nd from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. AGMA will meet with leadership from Glaziers Local Union 252 to discuss the following:
As per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), glaziers are required to complete continuing education classes each year. This long-standing requirement, modeled after compulsory training in occupations such as engineer, architect, or lawyer, is intended to keep the glazing workforce the best trained and educated. The idea is our workforce is well-paid, and in turn is well-trained.
Section 26.6.3 of the CBA lays out the eligibility and training requirements of Mechanic (100% glaziers’ rate), Jouneyperson (80% of glaziers’ rate) and, for the purposes of this communication, eliminates “grandfathered” status, effective May 1, 2025.
What does that mean in layman’s terms? Right now any glazier working prior to 2021 was “grandfathered” in as a Mechanic (100% rate) in the 2021-2024 CBA.
However, with changes in the CBA (2024-2027), on May 1, 2025 any individual who did not attend 8 hours of continuing education classes lost their “grandfathered” status and is subject to the terms of the current CBA in reference to “Mechanic” vs. “Journeyperson”.
AGMA will discuss with GLU252 Leadership “what happens now” in regards to the 2 classifications, what responsibilities fall to the employer, to the employee, and to GLU252 in maintaining this new system.
In addition, the IUPAT Pension Fund has changed its approach to retirees continuing to work in the glazing industry after retirement. GLU252 leadership has been working to understand the revised approach and will share its perspective on how your employees could be impacted if you currently employ or seek to employ a GLU252 retiree in an office position.
If you are interested in attending, please contact AGMA and a link will be sent.
